The British Museum is a comprehensive national museum with particularly outstanding holdings in archaeology and ethnography in the capital of Great Britain. Established by an act of Parliament, the British Museum was originally based on several collections: those of Sir Hans Sloane, Robert Harley, and Sir Robert Cotton. Today, the British Museum has unique cultural artifacts such as: the Rosetta Stone, which provided the key to reading ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs; the Elgin Marbles (a collection of different types of marble architectural decoration); the bust of Pericles; and the statue of Demeter; as well as other Greek sculptures from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and from the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. There are also masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein the Younger, Jean-Antoine Watteau, and many others.
