A. In 1994, the game-development team behind Sonic the Hedgehog were looking for a new character. They wanted it to be strong, aggressive, and frightening. The character they created was a wall-breaking echidna named Knuckles, one of the strongest in the series. Fans of these games might be surprised to learn that real-life echidnas have little in common with Knuckles; they are shy and non-aggressive, more likely to hide from trouble than to look for it. However, their unique history and biology make them just as fascinating as any video game creation.
B. The echidna can be found in a wide range of habitats across Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea, from forests to deserts and alpine meadows. It is believed to be the Earth’s oldest living mammal and one of its oldest surviving species. Fossil records suggest that echidnas’ ancestors existed over 100 million years ago, which means that they lived in the time of dinosaurs. Together with platypuses, echidnas belong to a very unusual group of animals called monotremes, which lay eggs although they are mammals and feed their young with milk.
C. Unlike Knuckles, real-life echidnas cannot defend themselves with their fists, but they do have some remarkable protective strategies. An echidna’s most visible protection comes from the long, sharp spines that cover its back and sides — modified hairs made of keratin (which can also be found in human fingernails). When they are threatened, echidnas will curl up into a ball or dig themselves partially into the ground, so only their spiny backs can be seen. If there’s soft ground, they can disappear in seconds, leaving predators confused.
D. Another trait that sets the echidna apart is its rare method of reproduction. The female echidna lays a single leathery egg, about the size of a grape, and places it into a temporary pouch on her belly. Ten days later, the baby echidna hatches. At birth, the baby echidna is tiny, blind and hairless. It licks milk directly from the milk patches on the mother’s skin. After about two months, the mother removes it from the pouch and leaves it in a hidden shelter, returning periodically to feed it. At the age of 9 months, young echidnas can look for food and survive on their own.
E. One of the most fascinating features of echidnas is their ability to feel the faint electrical signals given off by insects and worms. This skill, shared with some species of sharks and electric fish, is incredibly rare among land mammals. The echidna uses receptors in its long, rubbery snout to sense the tiniest movements underground. Once it locates prey, it uses its sticky tongue, which is up to 15 cm long, to catch ants, termites, and other small creatures. This superpower allows echidnas to find food even in total darkness or deep soil.
F. While Knuckles may be a tough guy in the video game world, real echidnas are superb in their own right, ancient, adaptable, and full of surprises. They can conserve energy efficiently and go for weeks without food, relying on stored fat. Before winter or during droughts, echidnas build up fat reserves, which help them live for weeks or even months without eating. Surprisingly, fat is stored in the echidna’s tail, especially in preparation for periods when there is not enough food. The tail may look small, but it plays an important role in energy management.
G. Echidnas are also known for an incredible trait that helps them live in the harshest environments on Earth. They can survive extreme heat in deserts as well as freezing cold in alpine regions. In colder climates, echidnas enter a state of torpor, or full sleep, during which their body temperature can drop to 4-6°C, one of the lowest recorded among mammals. But most astonishingly, echidnas have been observed surviving wildfires by digging deep into the ground. This ability to withstand environmental extremes makes them one of nature’s most successful survivors.
