A. In today’s extremely connected world, people have more access to one another than ever. Modern navigation and communication technologies have made it quite easy. It seems that search engines have charted and described every corner of the earth, including the houses of its inhabitants. But it’s not true. Societies known as “uncontacted peoples” remain in parts of the world. These are communities with little contact with the wider world, and we know just a few facts about their lifestyles. It is estimated that about 100 groups of uncontacted people exist today.

B. Generally, these groups remain uncontacted by choice, so it is impossible to know much about their societies. Learning about them is a delicate and often indirect process. Most information comes from aerial surveys, satellite images, and reports by nearby communities or local guides. Occasionally, formerly uncontacted individuals choose to join wider society and share stories about their former way of life. Although such information is often fragmented, it has led to a better understanding of the lives of uncontacted peoples and the challenges they face.

C. North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean is home to a group that clearly wishes to stay safe, separating itself from the rest of the world. North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, which are part of India. While groups on other islands have accepted tourism and development, the North Sentinelese fire warning arrows from their beaches at any boat that approaches their land. For decades, gifts and other efforts at peace from outsiders have been rejected. From what little we know about them, they have probably been isolated for tens of thousands of years.

D. While the North Sentinelese are surrounded by water, other uncontacted peoples live deep in the forest. Many groups have been identified in remote regions of Brazil. Jose Carlos Meirelles has worked with native peoples of Brazil for over forty years. A helicopter trip over an uncontacted Brazilian group gave him some facts about their existence. They live in thatched huts, surrounded by plots of corn, bananas, and tapioca. The people appear to be doing well, changing their location about every four years. And, like the North Sentinelese, the group shoot arrows at the outsiders.

E. Why might uncontacted peoples choose to remain isolated? Former members of uncontacted groups have said that after friends and family were attacked or killed by outsiders, they avoided any kind of contact. Even peaceful contact can have devastating effects. Many uncontacted groups have never suffered from diseases, not even the common cold or flu. As a result, they don’t have immunity to these illnesses, meaning that even minor contact with outsiders has resulted in deadly outbreaks. It’s not surprising that some groups may prefer to keep to themselves.

F. However, the outside world is closing in. Threats to uncontacted peoples’ lands are real. For example, the Brazilian jungle near Peru is now home to an increasing number of illegal loggers and gold miners, who cut down trees and dig for gold. Both activities worsen the quality of the rainforest by using natural resources, polluting ecosystems, and driving out wildlife. This leaves uncontacted groups with less and less land to live on. In fact, several uncontacted groups have been forced to initiate contact with the world after being driven from their homes.

G. Fortunately, in some countries, there are now special laws protecting uncontacted peoples. For example, a three-mile zone around North Sentinel Island has been established, which may not be crossed by curious onlookers on boats. Some activists argue that uncontacted peoples should be left completely alone. Others maintain that some peaceful contact is necessary to help them defend themselves against numerous threats. In a world that is so interconnected, the existence of uncontacted peoples challenges outsiders to rethink what it means to protect the interests of all.
