The School Garden Project
A.
(1) Maria has a true best friend. (2) Her name is Chloe, and they are in the same class at school. (3) Maria is an only child but she doesn’t mind it, though she really enjoys having Chloe as a friend. (4) They have always helped each other with projects, but one day their work saved the school garden.
B.
(5) Maria and Chloe were in Year 8 in Edinburgh. (6) They lived in the city centre, but their school had a big garden. (7) Most students weren’t interested in the garden. (8) They thought it was old and boring. (9) Maria and Chloe, however, were full of ideas. They worked hard to make the garden beautiful again. (10) They planted sunflowers, herbs and even some thistles, which grew amazingly well. (11) During the busy spring term, they often asked their friends to help with watering. (12) Their biology teacher, Mr McKenzie, always said they were the best team he had ever taught. (13) Chloe helped with everything, and Maria loved working with her.

(14) One morning, Mr McKenzie decided to move the old compost bins before the girls arrived. (15) He tried to lift a heavy wooden box full of wet soil, but it was too heavy. (16) He felt a sudden sharp pain in his back and fell to the ground. (17) Chloe saw what happened and ran straight to the school canteen to get help. (18) Mrs Ferguson, the cook, was shocked by her strange behaviour. (19) Chloe started shouting and pulling at Mrs Ferguson’s apron. (20) Then she ran to the school minibus and jumped into the front seat. (21) Mrs Ferguson finally realised something was seriously wrong. (22) She drove to the garden and found Mr McKenzie lying on the ground. (23) She called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital immediately.

THE TICKET FROM THE PAST

__________, the lights returned. The map was hanging quietly on the wall again, but a new paper train ticket was lying on the floor. It carried tomorow’s date. Maya put it into her pocket and decided to tell nobody about it until the next morning.

__________, the map swung forward like a narrow door. Behind it, Maya found a brass button and a handwritten note: “Press only if you are ready to see the city differently.” She had never seen such a misterious instruction before, but her curiosity was stronger than her fear.
