Russian Tea: More Than Just a Drink

Tea is an essential part of Russian identity. It keeps people warm on freezing days, provides a wake-up call, and feels satisfying after a heavy meal. However, in Russia tea is never just a beverage – it is a social occasion with centuries of tradition behind it. Despite coffee becoming more popular, it has never replaced tea in Russian hearts. Russians drink tea to celebrate, to comfort themselves, or simply because it is there.

Tea first arrived in Russia in 1638, when an ambassador brought it as a gift from the Mongol Khan to Tsar Michael Fyodorovich. The Tsar and his courtiers were not impressed by its bitter taste. Later, Ambassador Nicholas Spafary brought tea from China. By 1679, Russia had signed a trade deal with China for regular tea supplies.

It took Russians time to develop a taste for tea. Like many foreign things, tea was viewed with distrust. Chinese tea was expensive, while local herbal drinks were cheap and available. Only in the early 1700s did tea win a permanent place in Russian homes and become the national drink.

No Russian tea gathering is complete without the samovar. These magnificent vessels come in many shapes and sizes. The samovar always occupies the central spot on the table. Traditionally, samovars were heated with charcoal or pine cones, and the smoky aroma had a soothing effect. Each samovar had its own gentle humming sound as the water boiled, making the gathering feel cosy.

If invited for tea in Russia, guests are treated to a generous spread: jams, honey, cakes, pastries, chocolates, sandwiches, salads and fruit. Everything is beautifully arranged, making the tea table a feast for the eyes and the stomach.

Failing to offer tea to an unexpected visitor is considered rude – and refusing such an offer is equally frowned upon. The range and quality of food served with tea show the host’s respect for the guest. Personal relationships can cool down if only jam and sugar are served without proper food.

A famous anecdote illustrates this attitude. In 1802, Prince Shakhovskoy met Goethe in Munich. Goethe invited him for tea. When Shakhovskoy saw only tea on the table, he ordered sandwiches and pastries. The next morning, Goethe received a bill for the extra food – and he refused to pay, saying his invitation had been for tea only.

Another custom confusing foreign visitors is drinking tea from glasses in metal holders. This practice began in 17th-century teahouses. Wealthy people owned silver holders, while most people used nickel-silver alloys. The holders protected their palms from the heat. This tradition has almost disappeared from Russian homes but survives on long-distance trains.

Lena had only five minutes left to choose her topic for the final presentation. Without hesitation, she picked «Climate Change in Our Region» and said, «That’s it, I’m doing this one. Let’s get started.»

When his classmate asked what he thought of her essay, Daniel said, «Honestly? The introduction’s a bit weak, and I don’t think you actually answered the question.» His classmate was upset, but Daniel just shrugged and said, «You asked, so I told you the truth.»

Emma told her classmate, «Wow, your presentation was amazing! I loved every slide, seriously.» But the moment the classmate walked away, Emma turned to her friend and muttered, «That was actually so boring, I don’t know how she got such a good mark.»

During the group project meeting, three classmates suggested changing the topic because it was too difficult. Ben wouldn’t budge. «No way, we’re sticking with my idea,» he said, and just carried on working by himself, ignoring everyone else’s opinion.

Instead of asking his classmate directly for help with the homework, Jack first complimented her new phone, then went on about how exhausted he was after football practice, and finally sighed, «Guess I’ll just fail tomorrow’s test then.» His classmate didn’t realise what he was really after and offered to help him.

Everyone told Sophie that passing the advanced maths exam after failing it twice was impossible. But she studied every evening for three months, kept asking her teacher extra questions, and finally passed with one of the highest marks in her year.

After winning the school debate competition, Chris told his teammates, «Let’s be real, we only won because of me. You guys wouldn’t have stood a chance without my speech.» He didn’t bother to thank anyone else and made it pretty clear their input hadn’t really mattered.
